Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park forms part of the Virunga Massif. It borders Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. Most international visitors come to trek habituated mountain gorilla families under official park rules, but the park also offers Golden Monkey trekking, guided volcano hikes and conservation experiences. It is managed by the Rwanda Development Board, and wildlife trekking requires an official permit.

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda
Gorilla trekking is the park's signature experience. It requires an official permit (USD 1,500 per person) and starts with a 07:00 briefing at Kinigi headquarters, followed by ranger‒guided tracking through the forest. Treks usually take about 1 to 6 hours in total, depending on where the gorilla family is, the terrain and the weather. Once the family is found, groups of no more than eight visitors spend up to one hour with them. The minimum age is 15, and health and conservation rules protect the gorillas from human illness.

Golden Monkey trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Golden Monkeys are a striking, endangered primate found in the Virunga bamboo forests. Golden Monkey trekking is generally shorter and less demanding than gorilla trekking, making it a lighter, playful complement rather than a repetition. It requires its own official permit and fits naturally as a second forest day on a three-night stay.

What animals are in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda?
The park is home to endangered mountain gorillas and Golden Monkeys, along with other primates, forest mammals and a rich highland birdlife, including many Albertine Rift endemics. The wider Virunga Massif held 604 mountain gorillas in the last full census, and around a dozen habituated families in Rwanda can be visited. Forest elephants and buffalo are present but rarely seen. Sightings beyond the habituated gorilla and Golden Monkey groups are never guaranteed.
The park's high‒altitude forest and bamboo zones form a fragile ecosystem that supports these species, which is why visitor numbers, viewing time and behaviour are carefully controlled.

What is the weather like in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda?
The park is cool and humid all year because of its altitude. Daytime temperatures around Kinigi are usually mild, roughly 15 to 20 °C, while mornings, evenings and higher slopes can be much colder. The main rains fall from March to May and from October to November; June to September and December to February are relatively drier. Rain is possible in any month, but gorilla trekking runs year-round, so warm layers and reliable rain protection are useful in every season.

Relatively drier periods can offer more comfortable trail conditions, while wetter periods bring muddier trails and lush, green forest scenery and often fewer visitors. The best time also depends on room and permit availability, so the ideal window is the one where your preferred trekking date, accommodation and permit align.

Is it safe to go to Volcanoes National Park Rwanda?
Volcanoes National Park is one of Africa's most visited and tightly managed gorilla parks. Every trek is led by Rwanda Development Board rangers, accompanied by park security, in groups of no more than eight visitors, with clear rules on distance, behaviour and health. Because the park lies on the border with the DRC and Uganda, check your government's current travel advice, including any guidance on border areas, before booking and again shortly before travel. Five Volcanoes cannot provide a universal safety guarantee.
Is there malaria in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda?
Malaria occurs in Rwanda, but mosquitoes are far less common at the park's high altitude and around Musanze than in lower‒lying regions. Lower risk does not mean no risk, and most health authorities advise travellers to Rwanda to consider malaria prevention.
