Is Rwanda Safe to Visit in 2026? A Local Guide from Volcanoes National Park

Rwanda is widely seen as one of the safest countries in Africa. In Gallup's 2025 Global Safety Report, 78% of Rwandans said they feel safe walking alone at night. That is higher than in the UK (76%) or the United States (71%).
Rwanda is open, and gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park continues. Some governments updated their advice in 2026 because of the Ebola outbreak in neighbouring DR Congo. We live and work 15 minutes from the park. Here is what the advice says, what it means for your trek, and how to plan with confidence.

Is Rwanda safe to visit right now?

Yes. Rwanda is one of the safest and best-organised countries in Africa to visit. Violent crime against tourists is rare, police are visible, and every gorilla trek is run by the Rwanda Development Board. No Ebola cases have been reported in Rwanda (CDC, 14 October 2026). In 2026, some governments updated their advice because of the outbreak in DR Congo. The US State Department rates Rwanda Level 3 "Reconsider Travel" and advises against travel within 10 km of the DR Congo border. It states that Volcanoes National Park, Kinigi park headquarters and Musanze city are outside that border zone. The UK and Ireland advise against travel only to specific border districts. Check your government's latest advice and your travel insurance before you book.

What do official travel advisories say about Rwanda?

US STATE DEPARTMENT
Level 3, Reconsider Travel, since 17 May 2026, because of Ebola in DR Congo, crime and unrest. Level 4 applies only within 10 km of the DR Congo border. According to the advisory, Volcanoes National Park, Kinigi park headquarters and Musanze city are outside that zone.
UK FCDO
The UK advises against all but essential travel to parts of Rwanda near the DR Congo border, not against travel to Rwanda as a whole. Check the FCDO page for the exact areas before you book.
IRELAND DFA
High Degree of Caution (level 2 of 4). Avoid non-essential travel to Rubavu and Rusizi districts. Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is considered safe as part of an organised tour.
EBOLA STATUS
A large Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak continues in DR Congo, mainly in Ituri and North Kivu. No cases have been reported in Rwanda. Uganda's outbreak was declared over on 25 August 2026.
RWANDA ENTRY RULES
Rwanda screens arriving travellers as a precaution. Foreign nationals who were in DR Congo in the previous 30 days are refused entry, so plan your gorilla trek in Rwanda only.
BORDER AREAS
Border-area advice mainly concerns Rubavu (Gisenyi) and Rusizi, not the Musanze and Kinigi area where gorilla trekking starts. Land crossings into DR Congo are closed to most travellers.

Everyday safety in Rwanda: what travellers should know

CRIME
Violent crime against tourists is rare, but petty theft happens, especially in busy areas of Kigali. Keep valuables out of sight, use hotel safes and avoid walking alone late at night in unfamiliar areas.
SOLO AND FEMALE TRAVELLERS
Many women travel to Rwanda alone and report feeling safe. Normal precautions apply: dress modestly outside hotels, share your plans and use trusted drivers rather than unregistered taxis.
KIGALI
Kigali is clean, orderly and well policed, and central areas are generally safe to walk by day. At night, take a registered taxi or your private driver.
ROADS AND TRANSFERS
The Kigali to Volcanoes National Park road is paved and takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. Night driving is best avoided. A private driver who knows the route is the safest option.
HEALTH
Talk to a travel clinic about malaria prevention and vaccinations, and check whether you need a yellow fever certificate for your route. Never trek with gorillas if you feel unwell.
LGBTQ+ TRAVELLERS
Same-sex relationships are not criminalised in Rwanda, but society is conservative and public displays of affection are uncommon. Discretion is advised.

Is gorilla trekking in Rwanda safe?

Every trek in Volcanoes National Park is run by the Rwanda Development Board. You start with a 07:00 briefing at park headquarters in Kinigi, trek in a group of no more than eight visitors with experienced rangers and trackers, and keep a distance of about 7 metres from the gorillas. Habituated gorilla families are used to people, and rangers know each family well.
Volcanoes National Park borders DR Congo and Uganda. The US State Department states that the park, Kinigi park headquarters and Musanze city are outside its 10 km border zone, and advises using Rwanda Development Board treks with licensed guides. That is how every trek here runs. Read the full advisory, confirm your insurance, and we will share the current situation with you before you pay.
Gorillas can catch human illnesses. If you have a cold, fever or any sign of illness on trek day, tell your ranger. It protects the gorillas and you.
