Many Gorilla Trekking packages are assembled from several unrelated suppliers. Five Volcanoes brings together the operational parts that matter most through one Rwanda-based hospitality and tour-operations team.

1. We manage the official permit process

As a Rwanda-based tour operator, we manage Gorilla and Golden Monkey Permit requests through the official Rwanda Development Board process, and use the applicable tour-operator booking arrangements to align requested trekking dates with your stay.

Every permit remains subject to official availability, passport requirements, payment and final RDB confirmation. We never describe a permit as confirmed before the official process has been completed.

2. We operate our own fleet and drivers

Your Kigali pickup, journey to Musanze, park-headquarters transfers and return to Kigali are managed with our own vehicles and drivers — planned around your arrival, meals, official permit dates, trekking mornings and onward journey, not handed off to an unrelated transfer supplier.

3. We operate two boutique properties in Rwanda

Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel is your full-board base near Volcanoes National Park. The Governor's Residence in Kigali can be added before or after the journey for guests who prefer to recover after an international flight, experience Kigali, or spend a calm final night before departure. Both properties are supported by the same wider hospitality team.

4. We prepare the person, not only the itinerary

Before trek day, we speak with guests about general fitness, mobility, pace and relevant practical considerations.

With the guest's consent, relevant information can be shared with the authorized park team for consideration during the official group-allocation process.

DAY 1 — ARRIVE AND RESET

Kigali to Musanze

Meet your private Five Volcanoes driver at Kigali International Airport, The Governor's Residence, or your confirmed Kigali hotel.

Travel approximately 2.5 to 3 hours by road to Musanze under normal conditions.

Settle into your room, enjoy dinner and prepare for the forest without rushing into your first trek.

Our team reviews breakfast times, park departure, equipment and any practical fitness or mobility considerations with you.

DAY 2 — ENTER THE FOREST GENTLY

Golden Monkey Trekking

Begin with an early breakfast before traveling with your driver to Volcanoes National Park Headquarters.

Complete the official registration and briefing before continuing to the Golden Monkey trekking starting point.

Return to Five Volcanoes for lunch. The remainder of the day is intentionally kept quieter so you can recover and prepare for the Gorilla Trekking day.

Many guests planning Gorilla Trekking are not regular hikers. Some are over 50 or 60. Some have concerns about their knees, balance, asthma, previous surgery, recovery from medical treatment, or the possibility of holding the group back. These concerns should not be dismissed, and they should not be left until the morning of the trek.

Before the Gorilla Trek, our team asks about general fitness level, regular walking or hiking experience, mobility or balance concerns, knee, hip or back limitations, relevant practical health considerations, the altitude you are arriving from, preferred pace, and whether Porter or additional mobility support should be explored.

With your permission, relevant practical information can be communicated to the park team for consideration during the official group-allocation process.

Porter assistance is strongly recommended for many guests, including guests who are generally fit. For more significant mobility concerns, a sedan chair may sometimes be arranged in advance, subject to availability, confirmation and additional charges. Five Volcanoes does not provide medical advice. Guests with medical conditions or concerns should consult a qualified healthcare professional or travel clinic and obtain appropriate travel insurance before departure.

THE FIVE VOLCANOES PLANNING CLARITY PROMISE

Know what is confirmed before you commit

Before you confirm your Signature Journey, you receive one clear written proposal showing your travel dates, room category and configuration, the current status of each official permit, private-driver arrangements, meal plan, every included benefit and optional service, separately payable items, payment dates, cancellation and amendment conditions, and the next step required from you.

No payment is required to submit the initial inquiry. We never describe a permit, room or vehicle as confirmed before the relevant process has been completed.

Support when official travel conditions change

We understand guests may be concerned about changes to official travel advisories, flight routes, health-related border measures or entry requirements in their home country. Five Volcanoes cannot control government decisions, airline schedules or immigration rules.

When an official restriction materially affects a confirmed journey and the guest already knows the replacement dates: Five Volcanoes accommodation and our own private transport services can be moved without a Five Volcanoes amendment fee, replacement room and vehicle availability will be checked, any seasonal rate difference will be explained before the change, the official Permit rescheduling process will be supported, and revised Kigali or onward arrangements can be coordinated where requested.

Replacement dates remain subject to room and vehicle availability. Low Season and High Season rate differences may apply. Flights and third-party services follow their own conditions. Official permits remain governed by RDB rules. An amendment-fee waiver is not the same as a refund. Travel insurance remains strongly recommended.

What happens when a Gorilla Permit date changes?

A confirmed Gorilla Trekking Permit may currently be rescheduled through the official Rwanda Development Board process. The current RDB processing fee is 20% of the Permit fee — for a foreign-visitor Permit priced at USD 1,500, this currently means USD 300 per person, or USD 600 total for two guests.

Rescheduling submitted more than seven days before the original trekking date is currently automatically approved through the RDB process. Requests made within seven days remain subject to RDB approval. Five Volcanoes will assist with the process, but the final decision and official conditions remain with the Rwanda Development Board. Permit rules and fees can change and should be reviewed against current official RDB information before any rescheduling request is submitted.

Our team can explain how official guidance may affect the accommodation, transport and Permit arrangements included in the journey. Guests should verify current requirements with their government, airline, travel insurer and a qualified travel-health professional.

Why we recommend planning popular dates early

A Gorilla Trekking date cannot be planned around the hotel alone. The correct combination must be available at the same time: official Gorilla Trekking Permit, Golden Monkey Permit, preferred room category, suitable private vehicle and driver, and the correct arrival and departure sequence.

For popular High Season dates, we recommend beginning the inquiry approximately 9 to 12 months in advance, ideally around one year before travel. Short-notice availability may occasionally appear, but it should never be assumed or promised. Official Permit bookings remain subject to RDB availability and the applicable booking process.

OPTIONAL KIGALI EXTENSION

Add Kigali before or after the trek

Stay at The Governor's Residence, our sister boutique property in Kigali. A private stay there can be particularly helpful when your international flight arrives late, you want to recover before driving to Musanze, you would like to visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, you want a calm final night before flying home, your return flight leaves early, or you prefer not to travel directly from the Gorilla Trek to the airport.

Room upgrade and milestone occasions

Guests may request an upgrade to a Deluxe Room, suite or another available category. For honeymoons, anniversaries, birthdays and other milestone journeys, our team will also check whether an additional welcome arrangement or complimentary room upgrade may be offered. Complimentary upgrades cannot be promised and remain subject to season, occupancy and room availability.

Extend to four nights or add recovery

An additional night creates more time for recovery, a cultural experience, Dian Fossey-related experiences, Twin Lakes, another selected Volcanoes National Park activity, or quiet time at the lodge. Additional massages and wellness treatments may also be arranged according to availability and current pricing.

Continue through East Africa

Rwanda can be the beginning of a wider journey. After the Signature Journey, guests may wish to continue to Tanzania, Kenya, Zanzibar, or another destination within Rwanda. Through our local knowledge and selected partner network, we can assist with safari arrangements, regional flights, beach stays, private transfers, additional accommodation and onward itinerary planning. These extensions are prepared separately and remain subject to partner availability and confirmed terms. The Signature Journey should be confirmed first — the onward journey can then be built around the dates that are already secured.
