1-DAY GORILLA TREK FROM KIGALI

1‒Day Gorilla Trekking from Kigali: Is a Day Trip Worth It?

Yes, you can see the mountain gorillas in one day from Kigali. But it means leaving around 04:00, about 5 to 6 hours in a car and no time to recover.
Volcanoes National Park is about 2.5 to 3 hours from Kigali by road, and the briefing at Kinigi park headquarters starts at 07:00. Here is how a day trip really works, what it costs, and when one night near the park is the better choice.
✓ Gorilla permit: USD 1,500 per person, the same on a day trip or a longer stay
✓ Departure from Kigali around 04:00, back in Kigali in the evening
✓ Trek time from 30 minutes to more than 4 hours, plus one hour with the gorillas
✓ Alternative: 2 nights near the park, permit, Full Board and private driver from USD 2,435 per person

No payment is required to inquire. Permits are issued by the Rwanda Development Board and confirmed in writing before any payment.

Can you do gorilla trekking in one day from Kigali?

Yes. A 1‒day gorilla trek from Kigali is possible because Volcanoes National Park is only about 2.5 to 3 hours away by paved road. The trade‒off is time and energy: you leave Kigali around 04:00 to reach the 07:00 briefing at Kinigi, trek for anywhere from 30 minutes to more than four hours, spend one hour with the gorillas and then drive back the same afternoon. It works for travellers with a single free day. Most guests who can add one night near the park enjoy the experience far more.
THE HONEST VIEW FROM A LODGE NEAR THE PARK

The permit costs the same. The experience does not.

Your USD 1,500 gorilla permit buys exactly the same hour with the gorillas, whether you drive up from Kigali at 04:00 or walk out of a warm room 15 minutes from park headquarters. What changes is how you arrive: rested or after a night with three hours of sleep and a dark mountain road.
If your trek turns out long and steep, a day trip also leaves no buffer. One night near the park, or our 2‒Night Essential Stay, turns the same permit into a calm, unhurried day you will remember for the right reasons.
DAY TRIP VS. ONE NIGHT NEAR THE PARK

1‒day gorilla trek or overnight: what really changes

Same permit, same gorillas, same rangers. Four things are different.
Wake‒up time
Day trip: alarm around 03:30 in Kigali. Overnight near the park: breakfast at about 06:00 and a 15‒minute drive to the 07:00 briefing.
Time in the car
Day trip: about 5 to 6 hours of driving on the same day as the trek. Overnight: the Kigali drive happens the day before, in daylight, with time to see the hills.
Recovery after the trek
Day trip: muddy boots straight back into the vehicle. Overnight: lunch, a hot shower, a foot massage and an evening to talk about what you just saw.
Buffer for the unexpected
Day trip: traffic, rain or a long trek can squeeze your evening flight. Overnight: a second day for Golden Monkey trekking, rest or a relaxed transfer back to Kigali.

Who a gorilla day trip from Kigali suits, and who it does not

  • Suits: business travellers or conference guests in Kigali with one free day
  • Suits: fit, early-rising travellers on a tight schedule who already hold a permit
  • Not ideal: travellers arriving on a late or overnight flight the evening before
  • Not ideal: older guests, less experienced hikers or anyone prone to car sickness on mountain roads
  • Not ideal: guests flying out of Kigali the same evening, as a long trek leaves little buffer
  • Not ideal: anyone who wants to add Golden Monkey trekking, a Dian Fossey hike or time to recover

“We saw it all”: Ann and Bruce on trek day

Seeing mountain gorillas had been on Ann and Bruce’s bucket list for years. On trek day they were on the road by 6:30, met their rangers at park headquarters and spent their hour with silverbacks, playful juveniles and mothers with babies.
Back at the hotel around 10:30, the team was waiting with warm towels and helped them out of their muddy boots. They loved it so much that they trekked a second day.
“If seeing mountain gorillas is on your bucket list, make it happen. And when you do, come home to Five Volcanoes.”
